The Father of mercies and God of all comfort, comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.2 Corinthians 1:3-5
In the year 1940, P.S. Arthur, the young headmaster of a school, along with his wife, a teacher, chose to obey the call of the Lord, to serve Him. After completing his theological studies, he started as the pastor of the Tirunelveli Diocese, at Nazareth. After that, he continued his service as a pastor in various churches. God blessed this couple abundantly, with four daughters and two sons. This vibrant and dynamic pastor and his diametrically opposite, quiet and simple wife, endeared themselves to their pastorate Community at Madurai.
Then calamity struck this family! In November 1954, the mother died suddenly and quietly, after a week long illness at the age of 38. She left behind the promises of Isaiah 54 to her children. In November 1956, the father followed suit, succumbing to a respiratory illness, at the age of 44, leaving the children orphaned and almost penniless. A baffled Bishop Newbegin had the problem of six orphans in his hands! There were no takers among the extended family, to care for the six young ones! Finally, old Grandpa volunteered. “ This old man? For how long? ” muttered the Bishop! Yet, with no other option, the Bishop handed the kids over to the Grandpa. Being witnesses to the loss of their dear pastor and his wife within a short span of time and armed with the Bishop’s passionate appeal, the church elders enthusiastically mobilized INR. 10,000! All the six children were scattered to different boarding schools & hostels. The younger son, still in his single digit age, moved from home to a boarding school, a hostel and finally to an engineering college. During these hard days, only one thing sustained these children – God’s abundant comforting grace!
In spite of God’s continuous blessings & protection, His gift of musical talents & opportunities, and a vital link in marriage, into a religious musical family, that young man dodged and avoided the extended loving arm of a merciful Father, till he was 33 . Finally, when he realized and accepted Him, it was too late for him to serve the Lord full time. However, God gracefully gave this family, His burden to reach out to people in need who were passing through similar circumstances – death, terminal illness, calamity etc., with His songs of comfort. Starting in the late 1980s as “Songs by Chellappas”, this singing comforting ministry matured to take the name “Quiet Time Melodies” in 1994.
Over the past many years, God has moved many hearts to involve in this care-giving ministry and this paved the way to widen the area of operation beyond music & literature, to include financial support to the needy ones. And that is how and why Christian Comforting Ministries, a Public Trust, was formed – in response to the Lord’s call to comfort others with the same comfort that He has comforted us with, during the last several decades.
